HISTORY
After the Second World War there was a need for founding archives throughout the Yugoslavia. Soon after the liberation of Pancevo in 1944, the commander of place hired famous cultural workers from Pancevo in order to collect and preserve very rich archival documentation that generated from different political, cultural and economic events. The command was given to dr Mihovil Tomandl and professor Djordje Zivanovic and they were ordered to gather in and protect the archival records and books. Seeing the state of the archival records they issued a report in which they said that the state of the records is very bad as well as the conditions in which records are kept. They were also given the assignement to find, list and then issue the order to preserve the archival records.
The archival area of Pancevo was founded by the decision of the Municipal Executive Committee of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina (APV) No 16800/2 on November 2nd 1946. The archives of Pancevo was founded by the decision of the Cheif Executive Committee of APV in 1947, when professor Djordje Zivanovic was appointed as the head of this archival area.
The state archives evolved from the state institution which administred the most basic duties of the archival service to the self-governing work organization that, in accordance of the law, performed the service of protection and professional processing of archival records.
The archive center of Pancevo became the Municipal state archives in 1952, and later on the State archives of Pancevo.
The archives was situated, from its founding, in the building of Municipal public committee, and after 1951 was transfered in the building of the Serbian ortodox church community. Since 1965 the archives kept its documents in a part of the Magistrat building which is today’s National museum of Pancevo, but also continued to use the premises in the building of SPC community.
The historical archives of Pancevo owns 827 funds and collections, in total amount of 8840 metres.
Archives has records from 1718 to the end of XX century.
The jurisdiction of the archives comprehends the territory of Pancevo, as well as the municipalities of Kovacica, Kovin, Alibunar and Opovo.
This institution is organised as an unique service that includes processing and preserving archival records and registry material in registries, processing and organizing archival records, organizing depot, cultural and educational activity, research, library activity and publishing.
The archives of Pancevo, among listed, also performs the protection of archival records and registry material outside of the archives.
When the archival center of Pancevo was founded in 1947, the Magistrat records dating back from 1794 were collected, as well as the records from the Regiment bank. The oldest records in the archives is the fund of the Boundary regiment (1765-1872) that was organized in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Since 1979 the Historical archives of Pancevo is situated in the building of former austro-hungarian head-quarters that was built in 1875. The building was adapted and renovated for the needs of the archival service.
